Aligning with Nature

We are biological beings part of the inherent web of life, as we go through cycles of the seasons, we are adjusting to and encountering changes that are affected by the elements in our environment.
Late Winter and Spring are ruled by Kapha dosha characterised by qualities that are: heavy, cool, wet and stagnant.
Through Winter the body naturally accumulates the Kapha qualities that are watery, heavy and congested in nature when over-burdened, leads to colds, coughs and flu. During the change of season as we move into Spring, many people start to become prone to allergies and hayfever. As the temperature rises and we move into Spring, it's like a thawing of ice, as the moisture inside the body liquefy's and wants to be released.

In Ayurveda the practice of regular cleansing helps to adjust to seasonal changes throughout the year, where we can adapt and adjust our food choices to align with the needs of the body. It is during the seasonal transition that the body's immune system is more vulnerable to colds, flu and allergies.

In the West there is a different view to Ayurveda in terms of what a cleanse is. Usually people will undertake a water fast, eliminate certain foods and reduce food intake, with the intention of stripping toxins out. Science shows that water fasts and undertaking extreme measures, puts the body into the stress fight flight response, because the body thinks it is going into starvation mode. The body then hangs onto fat cells in the body, to hold on to energy reserves. It is more difficult to release fat-soluble toxins than water soluble toxins, so when the body holds onto the fat cells, it is also holding on to toxins in the fat.
An Ayurvedic 3 Day cleanse is a more balanced and gentle approach, as it uses easy to digest, nutritionally supporting foods that are less taxing on digestive function and helps gently release toxins from fat cells. It helps us navigate seasonal changes and helps build robust immunity and reduces the effects of stress by soothing the nervous system.

You can do this from the comfort of your home as the cleanse takes place over the weekend, where you can dedicate this time to relax, heal and nurture yourself.

Understanding the principles of Ayurveda and the 5 elements and how this affects the seasons and our health and wellbeing is important in undertaking this gentle cleanse.

About the Cleanse
At the heart of the cleanse, is fresh food cooked from scratch and is based around Kitchari, an Ayurvedic nutritious and easy to digest meal that gives supporting nutrition to the gut, whilst helping to eliminate toxins from the digestive system and fat cells.
The cleanse is about establishing regular meal times in the correct proportions that maintain energy and blood sugar levels, which promotes calm in the nervous system, good quality sleep and increased vitality. Check out my "Healthy Eating with Ayurveda" blog on my webpage where I give the recipe for Kitchari and talk about the benefits of the cleanse.
All refined foods are eliminated. During the detox you will be preparing wholesome home cooked, preferably organic foods (where possible) to give yourself the best chance to feel good. It will enable you to foster a more conscious connection to your relationship with food. By pressing the "re-set button" you will become aware of food cravings, bad habits and patterns that have acrued over time and clearly see the triggers that compel you to go for foods you might regret eating afterwards!

What's my Dosha?
Ayurveda defines 3 main mind/body types known as Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Understanding our characteristics, elements within us, the food we eat, the habits we adopt, is key to addressing any imbalances. You can determine your mind/body type through a doshic questionnaire that you will have access to when you sign up.

Digestive Capacity & Toxic Load Questionnaire
You will receive a questionnaire to assess the toxic load of the body and how your digestion functions. This is key to understanding how the doshas affect your ability to digest, and to choosing certain spices and foods that are more appropriate to eat during the detox.
What to expect
Book a week before the start of the cleanse to prepare yourself, so you can see what you need to buy in terms of food, spices and the herbs you'll need.
Day 1 consists of consuming liquids and a special digestive detox tea to give digestion a rest.

Days 2 & 3 there are small breakfast options, Kitchari for lunch and suggested recipes for dinner.
Daily Ayurvedic practices are offered along the way to support you through the detox, such as meditation, oil pulling and self massage.
You will be encouraged to incoporate daily health giving practices or Ayurvedic rituals that take just 5 mins to include. This is a cleanse to attend to your mind, body and spirit.

Joining a group cleanse journey, will enhance accountability and offer mutual support. Through collective effort and shared experience, we will encourage one another to stay committed to our goals.
Please note: This cleanse is suitable for those who are generally well in health, and do not have any conditions that might be contraindicated when taking Triphala, the recommended Ayurvedic herb in the cleanse. If you are unsure please contact your health provider and get permission. It is possible to follow the detox without taking the recommended herbs.
